The National Creation Fund announced Theatre Calgary (theatrecalgary.com) and the Arts Club as the recipients of the Fund's $150,000 investment in compelling new Canadian work. "It's been enormously gratifying to collaborate with a team of Canadian theatre practitioners on Hiro Kanagawa's adaptation of Mark Sakamoto's inspirational memoir, Forgiveness: A Gift from My Grandparents," says Forgiveness director Arima "Bringing theatrical storytelling to this true story of adversity and forgiveness will illuminate historical and human conditions, and issues that are as relevant today as they were over 70 years ago." The Fund's investment will allow the two companies to devote considerably more time to the developmental process.

The Musical Stage Company in association with Prime Mover Theatre Company is thrilled to announce the internationally renowned faculty for NoteWorthy 2020-21. Faculty include MICHAEL R. JACKSON, STEW, KIRSTEN CHILDS, STAFFORD ARIMA, with program mentorship by RAY HOGG and KEVIN WONG. Offered bi-annually, NoteWorthy allows composers, lyricists, and playwrights from across Canada to build foundational skills through master classes and guided collaborative writing assignments.
Stafford Arima will direct a digital version of Charles Dickens' classic tale, "A Christmas Carol" for Theatre Calgary. This newly abridged 80-minute adaptation by Geoffrey Simon Brown will feature a cast of three playing more than 25 characters.The play will feature Stephen Hair, who returns for his 27th year as Scrooge, Marshall Vielle Natay'ao'tako, and Jamie Tognazzini. The creative team includes: Scott Reid (Production Design), Katie Klingvall (Wardrobe Coordinator), Allison Lynch (Composer and Sound Design), Haysam Kadri (Associate Director), Jenna Rodgers (Dramaturg), and Jane MacFarlane (Voice Coach). The production will be filmed by Aaron Bernakevitch and 4K Film Production. The production will be available for audiences to watch at home starting December 11. The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Canada will host an "Industry Session Series" featuring internationally renowned theatre-makers. Arima will lead a session, "The Biz of the Show" on the business side of theatre, from developing and directing new musicals, to working in the US and the UK as a Canadian artist, and running one of Canada's largest regionals. Arima shares experiences from a career spanning over 20 years and hundreds of rehearsal halls and venues, focusing on creating new work and supporting theatrical productions in all stages of development.
On August 8th, P.A. TOKYO will host a live, virtual premiere of a cross-continental musical collaboration entitled, "WeSongCycle." Writers from Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom come together through Zoom to write a musical based on the theme, heroism, directed by Makiko Shibuya. The writers will be guided by Broadway advisors: Rob Rokicki, Telly Leung, Mariko Kojima, and Stafford Arima.

Stafford Arima will direct a production of "Allegiance" in Tokyo next year. The musical, produced by Horipro Stage will be making its international premiere, which tells the story of Japanese Americans facing internment during World War II.
A concert version of the Tony-nominated musical "Ragtime" will be presented April 27, 2020, at the Minskoff Theatre to benefit The Actors Fund. The evening will feature original cast members, including Audra McDonald and two-time Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell, with additional casting to be announced. Stafford Arima will direct with music supervision by David Loud. The conductor is James Moore. The concert will be dedicated to the late Marin Mazzie, who received one of her three Tony nominations for her portrayal of Mother in the original 1998 production.

Theatre Calgary has announced the cast for "The Secret Garden," which will close out Theatre Calgary's 50th Anniversary season. To be directed by Arima, "The Secret Garden" will feature some notable names in Canadian musical theatre, along with a large number of Calgary artists: Laura Brandt, Matthew Bruce, Lucian-River Mirage Chauhan, Matt Chittick, Dave Comeau, Eric Craig, Ma-Anne Dionisio, Tory Doctor, Susan Gilmour, Jillian Hannah, Greer Hunt, Allison Lynch, Doug McKeag, Elizabeth Stepkowski-Tarhan, Trisha Talreja, Brent Thiessen, Suchiththa Wickremesooriya, and Eric Wigston. "Tiananmen" (music by Drew Fornarola and book by Scott Elmegreen) heads into a 29-hour reading featuring: Zachary Noah Piser, Elena Wang, Karl Josef Co., Julia Abueva, Grace Choi, Marcus Choi, Katie Lee Hill, Kendyl Ito, Austin Ku, Kenneth Lee & Toren Nakamura.
Stafford Arima will direct the San Diego premiere of Lolita Chakrabarti's play Red Velvet at The Old Globe. Red Velvet follows the controversy that erupts when American actor, Ira Aldridge becomes the first black man to play the title role in Shakespeare's play, Othello. Casting and creative team to be announced. Previews begin in March.
The new musical Mary & Max starring Tony winner Shuler Hensley, Tony nominee Sydney Lucas, Julia Murney, Kyle Scatliffe and Lauren Elder will have a private presentation in New York City on January 9. Directed by Stafford Arima and written by Bobby Cronin and Crystal Skillman, Mary & Max is adapted from the claymation feature film by Academy Award-winning writer/animator, Adam Elliot.
